Welcome to Poppy Run
A 5k race for veterans organizations in memory of those who fought for our freedom.Founded by Grady Langenderfer as a tribute to his grandfather’s friends who never made it home from Vietnam, the Poppy Run 5K continues to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. This year, the race takes on even greater significance as we also remember Grady’s grandfather, Thomas J. Langenderfer, who passed away on January 30, 2025.
A proud U.S. Marine and Purple Heart recipient, Thomas served in Vietnam with courage and resilience. He returned home to build a life centered around family, farming, and nearly 40 years of dedication at General Motors. His strong work ethic and commitment to service were evident in everything he did, from running his own painting business to volunteering at the Fulton County Fairgrounds. When he wasn’t working, he found joy in raising cattle, a passion he passed down through generations. He took great pride in caring for his herd and ensuring the land was well-kept, values that reflected his deep-rooted love for farming.
Above all, Thomas was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. His legacy of sacrifice, perseverance, and dedication to both his country and his family lives on through the Poppy Run 5K and the values it represents.
Join us on May 24, 2025, at the Fulton County Fairgrounds in Wauseon, Ohio, for a 5K run/walk and a kids’ ½ mile race. The event will begin with a pre-race Memorial Day ceremony to reflect on the sacrifices of our nation’s heroes, including those who never made it home and those, like Thomas, who served with honor and dedication.
Finisher medals and age group awards will be presented, but participants must be present for the awards ceremony, as awards will not be shipped.
